Atlanta studio finds the perfect sonic fit for its ‘B’ room
The installation of a Neve Genesys at Atlanta’s Zac Recording has already resulted in increased demand for its ‘B’ room, reports studio owner Jim Zumpano. Recognizing the untapped business potential of Zac’s smallest space, Professional Audio Design’s Dave Malekpour had sent a Genesys demo unit to Zumpano, and in a matter of days the console was configured, up and running.
It wasn’t long before Zumpano and company recognized that this represented the next generation at Zac Recording, whose clients include Fergie, Snoop Doggie Dog and R. Kelly. The 24-fader Genesys – fitted with eight transformer-based Neve 1073 preamps plus 16 preamps using the same circuitry as Neve’s flagship 88RS console – has, says Zumpano, ‘opened up a whole new world… the room pumps like nobody’s business.’
The purchase of the Genesys came after a thorough examination of the available options. ‘I spent about three years trying to figure out what I was going to put in this room, which is on the tight side,’ Zumpano adds. ‘I was looking for the right combination of high quality analog circuitry and digital functionality. I looked at other consoles, but they just couldn’t offer the right combination.
‘[Since we installed the Genesys] the bottom end has a chunkiness to it that sounds great. The audio makes sense now – it feels like things aren’t being squeezed like they were on our previous console.’
