Sir George Martin CBE (3 January 1926 – 8 March 2016)

10th March 2016

Legendary British producer Sir George Martin, sadly passed away earlier this week aged 90.

Neve’s relationship with Sir George spanned four decades, and became cemented when he opened AIR Studios in Central London in 1969, placing an 8038 in its main room. In the early 70’s, Martin expanded AIR, opening its sister studio, AIR Montserrat. It was during this time that Martin and Neve worked closely together to develop what would later become one of the most legendary consoles in Neve’s history, the AIR Montserrat. Three of these iconic mixing desks were manufactured, with the first taking pride of place in the Montserrat studios, and the remaining two installed in AIR’s Oxford Street studios.

George’s legendary ear for quality helped make the AIR Montserrat console what it is, and the recreation of the “AIR Montserrat” remote mic pre-amps for the Neve 88R, installed in Studio 1 at AIR Studios, Lyndhurst Hall, continue to be used day in day out.  Sir George was immensely proud, describing the desk as “the Rolls-Royce of the industry.”

George was appointed a CBE for his services to the music industry in the 1988 honours list and in 1996, was made a Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Sir George Martin was a giant of the British music scene. A true genius and innovator, who had a remarkable career that has spanned decades, he leaves behind a legacy that will endure forever. ‪Rest in peace Sir George.
